Domain name registration.
I suggest that you find a domain name which matches the terms which people would type into the browser when they are looking for a site like yours or the one you're planning. I believe that if your name matches the top words that people will search for, you'll get a higher search engine listing. Take a look at some of the top search results, quite often the results where the domain name matches some part of the search term get high up the listings. There's 2 great links at www.Overture.com  which can help you understand which terms are most searched for. Go to "Visit the Resource Center" then "View Bids Tool". They way I'd use it would be to place the domain name in the "View Bids Tool" box and see how many times that term was searched for. See whether it's the top search term. Can it be improved?

I used to avoid using hyphens in domain names but I recently looked at the search results and saw that hyphenated names were also getting top listings.

Don't forget that a .com domain name is generally more valuable than a .net Make sure also that the domain you register can be understood easily if somebody tells it to a friend and they haven't got the advantage of seeing it seen written down. E.g. 1bigdomain.com - is that "1" or "one"? If you like domains with numbers in them, buy both spellings.
